The Studio
Where artistrymeets concretemastery.
Concrete arrives structural. It is poured to hold a building up, and nobody expects it to be beautiful. The whole trade consists of disagreeing with that.
A painted faux finish fooled Damon once, a black marble coffee table base that was not marble. He has spent every year since making surfaces look like something they are not, and making ordinary ones look like art.
Over 30 years of it: Nebraska, twenty two years in Arizona with designers and architects, and now the Big Island of Hawaii. Custom work goes to his community on the island and to clients around the world.

A café floor turned into an ocean, a gathering yurt, a memorial printed with fronds, an estate where the finishes were meant to disappear. Each one described from the studio's own account or the client's review.

Kailua Village
An old 1971 bare concrete floor stained into an ocean. Once it was finished, the owners saw the studio's alcohol ink work and asked for a custom counter sneeze guard as well, so the café's floor and glass now read as one piece.

Yurt floor
Earthsong Foundation
A new concrete floor poured for a large yurt used for gatherings, stained and sealed into an ocean like surface. In the foundation's words, it brings everyone joy when they walk in.

Consultation
A free first meeting to go through colour possibilities, and which techniques can get the result you want given the condition of your concrete.
- 02
Sample
Colours are worked up as samples before anything is committed, so the finish is matched to the space and what is going into it.
- 03
Preparation
The surface is prepared properly first, including repairs, which is what lets a finish last. Minimal disruption to your space throughout.
- 04
Finish & seal
The finish goes on by hand and is topcoated and sealed, with slip resistance added in wet areas like pool decks.

Always an artist
Damon has always been an artist. As a boy he made works of art and would run up the stairs to show his parents.
1985 / Arizona
The coffee table
Shortly after moving to Arizona, a downstairs neighbour showed him a black marble coffee table base with a half inch piece of glass on top. It was not marble. It was a painted faux finish. He was hooked from there.
22 years / Arizona
Recipes
He developed his own decorative finishes, recording each one to keep the recipe for that finish. He married, had kids, and spent years working with designers and architects on commercial and residential hand painted finishes.
Over 20 years / Big Island, Hawaii
Island wide
Now in Hawaii, he has created decorative finishes and stained concrete across the island. On one estate, hired by Tinguley Construction, he faux finished every outlet cover so it vanished into the wall behind it: grass cloth wallpaper duplicated, coconut wood grain on recessed lighting, granite and natural stone matched.
Recently / Captain Cook
Alcohol ink on glass
Wanting more colour intensity, Damon started working in alcohol ink. The work began on canvas, then moved onto secondhand framed glass, left to dry overnight into a snowflake like bloom. That became the studio's commissioned art glass.

Years of hand craft
Outstanding work to our large driveway
Damon did a great job of staining and applying texture to our large concrete driveway. The drive had been done in three stages over time: three colors, three textures, and it detracted from the looks of our house. He did great work in finding the right color and texture for us, did the job on time, as promised and within budget. In the process, he became our friend and a trusted artist and contractor. I highly recommend him.
Koa wood columns
Aloha, I just wanted to extend a warm Mahalo to Damon. He was able to wood grain and restore our wood columns that sustained water damage from sprinklers. His decorative finishes are amazing, as well as his art. We would recommend him for any artistic project. He works from his heart.
Pool deck and lanai
My contractor had some health issues and hired someone to stain my pool deck and lanai. They made a real mess. I contacted Damon and he was able to do a hand painted finish over the top and turned it into a lava flow look that looks amazing! His insight and artistry are amazing.
Interior floors
My floors were in need of an upgrade! I contacted Damon and he was able to restore and touch up some blotched areas in the stain. He then topcoated it and returned it to its beautiful glory.
